Bats living in caves and mines in the northeast US are suffering from a disease of unknown origin that is externally evidenced by a white fungal growth on the animal's nose and wings. The condition disrupts hibernation and feeding cycles and is a serious threat to bat populations.
Bat Conservation International has established the White-nose Syndrome Emergency Response Fund to speed research by awarding seed grants of $2,000 to $5,000.
