Volcanic Caves

The National Cave and Karst Research Institute (NCKRI) and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) are jointly organizing a session at this year’s Geological Society of America (GSA) Convention:

Volcanic Caves: Geological & Microbiological Terrestrial Analogs of Potential Extraterrestrial Conditions.

Volcanic caves provide unique insights into the emplacement of lava flows and the origin of volcanic terrains. Their study reveals flow complexities, evidence of underlying landforms, evolutionary patterns in landform development, and rare to unique mineralogies and microbiological communities. As high resolution imagery of extraterrestrial planetary bodies reveals increasing evidence of volcanic caves, improved understanding of terrestrial volcanic caves is crucial for accurate remote interpretation of their extraterrestrial counterparts.
